Are you constipated? You are not alone. Ten to twenty percent of the population suffers from constipation. If you have already improved your lifestyle by eating more fibre, exercising daily, doing enemas and colonics, but are still constipated, you may want to try a salt water flush.
Did you know that you should have one to three bowel movements daily? Anything less than that is called constipation. Most of the time, constipation occurs because of a lack of fibre, dehydration, or a poor lifestyle. But it can also be caused by certain medical conditions, drugs, or supplements.
A salt water flush, or salt water cleanse, permits to cleanse your colon and the rest of your digestive system, by provoking a bowel movement. Salt affects the muscles and nerves in the digestive tract and make them contract, pushing waste out of the colon. It can eliminate toxins and improve your digestion instantly.
Drinking a salt solution fires up your body’s detoxification mechanism, and flushes out all the accumulated waste in your bowels. This process can help restore the balance in your digestive system, making you feel less sluggish.
A salt water flush is easy to do at home, and it is cheaper and safer than laxative teas and colon cleansing drugs. It permits constipation relief, while letting go of toxic buildup in the colon.
Salt water flush recipe
- 1 litre of filtered water
- 2 teaspoons of sea salt (or pink Himalayan salt)
- 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice (optional)
How to do the salt water flush
It’s better to perform the salt water flush on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. That way, there will be no more food in your stomach and small intestine. If you do it later during the day, it should be at least 2 hours after eating.
Heat up your water. It should be warmer than room temperature, but not too hot. If the water is too hot, you won’t be able to drink is fast. It should not be as hot as a cup of coffee.
In a large jar, pour the warm water, add the salt and mix well. It’s best to use a jar with a lid, so that you can close it and shake it until all the salt is dissolved. Make sure that there are no granules left at the bottom of the jar.
If you do not like the taste of this salt solution, add fresh lemon juice. It will help cut the taste of the salt. If it’s still difficult for you to drink, plug your nose!
The goal is to drink the salt solution as fast as you can. It’s very salty so you probably won’t like it! Don’t take more than five minutes to drink it.
Lay down and hold this solution for 30 minutes if you can. You might feel the urge to go to the bathroom. Don’t fight it. If you can’t hold it, just sit on the toilet. It may take some time to fully empty your colon. You will probably visit the bathroom more than once within the next hours, so don’t go to the mall just yet.
Once you are done, you should feel relieved, lighter and “cleansed”. If this is not enough for you and would like to attempt a deeper cleanse, you may want to try this 7 day program.
